What is Blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty is an operation to remove excess skin and fat from your eyelids and to tighten your skin and soft tissues around your eyes.

Am I a good candidate for it?

The procedure may involve removal or repositioning of skin and/or tissue in the upper or lower eyelids, depending on individual clinical findings.

Are there any alternatives to a blepharoplasty?

Dr Fotouhi may be able to assess you for laser resurfacing, where a laser is used to gently burn the surface of your skin in a controlled way. Injecting wrinke reducing agents or volumising agents can also used to smooth out fine wrinkles.

What are the benefits of surgery?

Expected outcomes vary between individuals and will be discussed during consultation. Suitability for this procedure is determined following a comprehensive medical assessment, including discussion of potential risks, benefits, and recovery.

Your doctor will carry out a detailed assessment before deciding if surgery is suitable for you.

What does the operation involve?

  • The operation usually takes an hour to 90 minutes.

  • An upper-eyelid blepharoplasty is usually performed under a local anaesthetic that is injected in your eyelids. Dr Fotouhi will make a cut on the natural skin crease just above your eyelid. They will remove any excess skin and fat that is pushing through the muscle.

  • A lower-eyelid blepharoplasty is performed under a local anaesthesia or deep sedation.

  • Dr Fotouhi will make a cut along the rim of your eyelid below your eyelashes to just beyond the outside edge of your eye. He will remove any excess skin, and remove or redistribute any fat that is pushing through the muscle.

There are different techniques with external approach and transconjuctival approach which Dr Fotouhi will explain during the initial consultation.

What complications can happen?

All surgical procedures carry risks.
These may include bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, dry eyes, changes in eyelid position, and the potential need for further procedures.

A detailed discussion of risks and benefits will be provided during consultation.
